BEAN town.....day ONE part I

They don't call Boston Bean Town for no reason....yes they are famous for their sweet, molassesy (?word) baked beans! Which of course we sought out and ate!

But first we started our days journey with a lesson in the T (which is Bostons subway system). I am lacking in some very important pictures on this vacation, and us trying to figure out the ticket buying process for a family of six was one picture I will forever regret not taking...

Once we successfully made our train transfer we were downtown Boston right by Quincy Market and Fanneuil Hall. Which I also failed to get a picture of! Nothing like missing out on the historical hot spots. We were there...I just can't prove it.

We started out with the Freedom Trail walk. It's very easy just follow the red painted line or red brick path all they way through town.

It's 2 1/2 miles. Very easy to do in an afternoon. Another thing I did not do to prepare for this trip, is buy a travel book, and read ALL about everything...So we sort of wung it and guessed a little bit about some of the history stuff.

The trail is the path that Paul Revere and his men took to warn the people that "the British were coming" and what else was there "one if by land two if by sea" or something like that.

There he is, Paul, behind the Ainslie and Luke on his trusty stead!

(still can't figure out the vertical picture thing)

Ok enough history it is time for a serious SNACK and thanks to our good friend Beth M. we found Modern Bakery...this place is the REAL deal, the authentic Italian bakery. There was a line...that is always a good sign in my book. This was not our glazed donut type of place....

I waited in line for about 30 minutes while Ken was out on sidewalk, rotating kids into the bakery to see "what the heck was taking so long"! I ordered all the stuff that we NEVER would get at home in a bakery. Then we found ourselves a nice little picnic table, right smack dab across the street from Paul Reveres house...we didn't go into his house we just ate our yummies and admired it from the outside.

Not sure what the mean face from Cece is about....

She probably just wanted first dibs on the moon pie.

Creamy, custardy goodness....go Ainslie!

This above pastry is called "the Lobstah" and it is as big as a new born baby..you get to pick our choice of fillings. Chocolate, custard, ricotta, whip cream.....we chose custard. It was to die for.

Canoli Kenny? They fill them on the spot...ours was ricotta filled with almonds on the ends. Easily the best canoli I have ever eaten...good thing these Babies are in Boston and I am in Grandville Mi!

Luke lickin' ever last bit of that custard out of the corner of his mouth. DELICIOSO!

So we continued on our Freedom trail walked rejuvenated by our sugar stop. We made a little detour off the trail and took a look at the U.S.S. Constitution. An old war ship...from 1812. It was under heavy repair so we did a quick tour of the deck and were not able to go below the deck.

From there we headed up to Bunker Hill on the Freedom trail. Walking along this path through the city, not only gave us a great sense of the history of Boston, but just a awesome look at how people live in this city today. It is a beautiful city, and the 70 degree sunny weather made it even more beautiful and quaint.

Bunker Hill is a memorial to the soldiers that lost their lives during the June 17, 1775 battle between the British and the Americans.

Boys at this point are very bored and hungry, again...

View of city from Bunker Hill Memorial.

The trail took us back toward the city center where we took a detour off on our own adventure of "the Garden", and eating pizza, and opening unbelievable emails!

Directly across from The Garden (it's where the Boston Celtics basketball team plays)we found a "hole in the wall " pizza place called Kings Half Time Pizza, or something like that... The kids claim it is the BEST pizza they have ever eaten. UMMM....I think they were just very hungry and crashing down from that sugar buzz we had them on from our bakery stop earlier in the day. I will say it was a cheap eat. We ordered a large cheese pizza and 4 large pops for $15! Feeding 6 people for under $20 is tricky.

Day one of Boston to be continued....
